Psychosomatic symptoms: when mind and body speak together

Headaches, stomach pain, tight shoulders or tiredness that is hard to explain. Sometimes the body shows us that something is weighing on us. The symptoms are real and they deserve care.

Your doctor comes first

If you have physical symptoms, the first step is always to see your personal doctor or a specialist. Your doctor will examine you and check for any physical cause that needs treatment.

Psychological support does not replace medical care. It can, however, help alongside it, whether or not a physical cause has been found. If you have not seen a doctor yet, we suggest you do so before or together with your sessions.

How mind and body are linked

When we live with stress, worry or sadness for a long time, the body stays on alert. This can show in our sleep, digestion, muscles or energy. The symptoms are not 'imaginary'. The body really feels them.

It works the other way too: when a physical symptom goes on for a long time, it brings worry, irritability or sadness, and these in turn can make the symptom feel stronger.

Many people go through lots of tests and feel frustrated when there is no clear answer. That is exhausting and understandable. Psychological support does not mean the search stops. It means you look after your emotional wellbeing in the meantime too.

Symptoms people often describe

Everyone is different. Some examples are:

  • headaches or tension in the neck and shoulders
  • stomach aches or digestive discomfort
  • tiredness that rest does not fix
  • trouble sleeping
  • tightness in the chest or feeling short of breath, which should always be checked by a doctor first
  • in children, tummy aches or headaches before school

How we can help

At Safe Space Psychology Center in Latsia we listen without questioning what you feel. Together we look at when the symptoms appear, what is going on in your life at that time and what helps you feel calmer.

Through therapy, many people learn to notice pressure earlier, to express what they have been holding in and to take better care of themselves. When needed, we also work with other professionals, so that your care is joined up.

We work with adults, children and teenagers. With children, parents often take part in the sessions too.

Your first session and emergencies

In the first meeting you tell us what you are feeling, what your doctor has told you and what you would like to change. Sessions take place in person or online, privately or through GeSY where it applies, in Greek, English or Romanian.

If you have a sudden or very strong symptom, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, do not assume it is stress. Call 112 straight away or go to the A&E department (ΤΑΕΠ) of the nearest hospital.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean my symptoms are 'all in my head'?

No. The symptoms are real and your body feels them. Psychological support helps us look at how stress and emotions may be affecting them.

Do I need to see a doctor first?

Yes. We always start with your doctor, so that physical causes are checked. Psychological support can then help alongside medical care.

Will you tell me to stop my medication?

No. Psychologists do not give advice about medication. For anything about your treatment, please speak with your doctor.

Can a child be helped too?

Yes. Once your child has been seen by their paediatrician or doctor, we can work with the child and with you as parents.
