Individual therapy for adults

Sometimes life feels heavy and you are not sure where to begin. Therapy gives you a quiet space to talk, make sense of what is happening and find your own way forward.

Who it is for

Individual therapy is for any adult going through a hard time, or anyone who wants to understand themselves better. You do not need to have a serious problem to ask for support. It is enough that something is weighing on you.

People come to us with things like:

  • anxiety, worry or panic attacks
  • sadness, emptiness or low mood
  • grief and loss
  • difficulties in relationships or communication
  • low self-esteem
  • pressure at work or big life changes
  • painful experiences from the past

What therapy is

Therapy is a series of conversations with a trained psychologist. You talk about what is on your mind, and together you look at what keeps the difficulty going and what could change. Your psychologist will not judge you or tell you what to do. They help you see things more clearly.

The World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association both note that psychological therapies can help many people with anxiety, depression and other difficulties. There is no single method that suits everyone. Your psychologist will explain how they plan to work with you.

What it can offer you

Everyone brings something different to therapy, and every therapy moves at its own pace. We do not promise quick fixes. Many people find, though, that their sessions help them to:

  • understand what they feel and why
  • find gentler ways to cope with stress and difficult thoughts
  • say more clearly what they need in their relationships
  • treat themselves with more understanding
  • make decisions they had been putting off for a long time

How we work at the centre

Our team is made up of clinical and counselling psychologists, all registered with the Cyprus Psychologists' Registration Board. When you contact us, we suggest the psychologist whose experience best fits what you are going through.

Sessions take place in person in Latsia or online, privately or through GeSY where it applies. You can speak in Greek, English or Romanian. What you share stays confidential, apart from the few situations set out in law. You can start in person and carry on online, or the other way round, depending on what suits you at the time.

If needed, we can also work alongside our external associates, for example a psychiatrist.

Your first session

The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your psychologist will ask what brought you, how long you have felt this way and what you would like to change. You do not need to have the answers ready. You set the pace and share only what you feel ready to share.

It is also your chance to ask questions and see whether you feel comfortable. Trust between you and your psychologist matters a great deal. If something does not feel right, it is completely fine to say so.

If you need help right now

Therapy is not an emergency service. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, do not wait for an appointment. Call 112 or go to the A&E department of your nearest hospital. Reach out to someone you trust as well.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

Not for private sessions. To see a clinical psychologist through GeSY, you need a referral from your personal doctor or a specialist doctor.

What is the difference between a clinical and a counselling psychologist?

Both are registered psychologists and both offer therapy. Their training has a slightly different focus. If you are unsure which suits you, tell us what is going on and we will suggest someone.

Will you prescribe medication?

Psychologists do not prescribe medication. If it would help, we can work with a psychiatrist or with your own doctor.

Can I have my sessions online?

Yes. Many people have some or all of their sessions online. You can talk this through with your psychologist.
