Effective communication: speaking and being heard
Many tensions at home, in a relationship or at work do not start with what we say, but with how we say it and how we listen. Good communication can be learned at any age.
What makes communication hard
When we are tired, hurt or stressed, we listen less well and speak more sharply. We often try to win the conversation instead of understanding the other person, or we shut down to avoid a fight.
We learned much of the way we communicate in the family we grew up in. Some of us learned to shout, others to stay quiet. Neither is a 'character flaw'. They are habits, and habits can change.
Signs that something is not working
You may recognise some of these:
- the same arguments come up again and again
- you feel you are not heard or understood
- you avoid difficult conversations to keep the peace
- you say 'yes' when you want to say 'no'
- discussions end in shouting, sarcasm or days of silence
- you feel lonely even next to people you love
What can change
Effective communication does not mean agreeing on everything. It means being able to say what you feel and need with respect, listening to the other person without already preparing your reply, and finding solutions together.
Many people find that when the way they talk changes a little, the atmosphere at home or at work changes too. They learn to set boundaries without guilt and to share their view without hurting others.
In sessions we work on very practical things: how to start a difficult conversation, how to talk about your own feelings instead of blaming, how to take a break when tempers rise and how to come back to the conversation once you have calmed down. You try these out little by little in daily life, and we talk them through together again.
How we work at the centre
At Safe Space Psychology Center in Latsia we can work with you on your own, with your partner in couples therapy, or with the whole family. In sessions we look at what happens when you talk, what sets you off and what would help you be heard.
With parents, we often work on how to talk with their children and teenagers, so that there is trust and clear boundaries at the same time. For organisations and businesses, we support better relationships at work.
Sessions take place in person or online, privately or through GeSY where it applies, in Greek, English or Romanian.
Your first session and safety
In the first meeting you tell us what is difficult and with whom. If you come as a couple or a family, we make sure everyone is heard. Nobody is here to be blamed.
If there is violence at home or you fear for your safety or your children's safety, safety comes first. If you are in immediate danger, call 112.
Frequently asked questions
Can I come on my own if my partner does not want to?
Yes. When one person changes the way they communicate, the dynamic of the relationship often shifts too. You can start individually and later see whether your partner would like to join.
Will you take sides?
No. A psychologist is not a judge. Our role is to help everyone be heard and understand each other.
Is it only for couples?
No. We work on communication with adults, parents, families, teenagers and teams in the workplace.
Can couples sessions be online?
Yes, sessions can also take place online over a secure video connection, if that suits you better.
