Difficult emotions: when they start to weigh on you
Anger, sadness, guilt, shame and fear are part of being human. When they stay with you for a long time or wear you down, though, it helps to look at them with someone who can listen.
Every emotion is there for a reason
Emotions are not 'good' or 'bad'. They tell us something about what is happening to us. Anger can be a sign that something feels unfair, sadness that we have lost something that mattered, fear that we feel unsafe.
Many of us grew up learning to hide what we feel, or to feel ashamed of it. But feelings we push down rarely go away. They tend to find another way out, through the body, our mood or our relationships.
When it may help to get support
You do not have to wait until you reach breaking point. Talking to a psychologist may help if you notice that:
- a feeling has lasted for weeks and will not lift
- you get angry quickly and regret it afterwards
- you feel guilt or shame about things you cannot change
- you avoid people or places so you do not have to feel something
- you feel empty, or as if you feel nothing at all
- your sleep, work or relationships are starting to suffer
How we work with you
At Safe Space Psychology Center in Latsia we offer a calm space where you can say what you feel without being judged. Together we try to understand where a feeling comes from and what it is telling you.
Step by step, we look for ways that suit you to cope with it, to express it safely and to stop it from taking over. Many people find that simply putting a name to what they feel already makes it a little lighter.
Depending on what you need, we can work in individual therapy, in counselling sessions or, when the issue involves others, in couples or family sessions.
For children and teenagers
Children often do not yet have the words for what they feel. Anger, tears or withdrawing can be their way of showing that something is hard for them. We work with children, teenagers and parents, so that the child learns to recognise their feelings and parents know how to support them. You are welcome to come first as parents, so we can talk about what you notice at home.
Your first session
In the first meeting you tell us what brings you here and what you would like to change. You do not need to have the answers ready. Sessions take place in person or online, privately or through GeSY where it applies, in Greek, English or Romanian.
If at any point you have thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, do not wait for your appointment. Call 112 or go to the A&E department (ΤΑΕΠ) of the nearest hospital.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to feel anger or jealousy?
Yes. Everyone feels anger, jealousy, sadness or fear. What matters is how often, how strongly, and what you do when you feel them.
Will you tell me to stop feeling something?
No. The aim is not to make emotions disappear, but to understand them and find ways to handle them without them hurting you.
I do not even know what I feel. Can I still come?
Of course. Many people come with a general sense that something is not right. We can make sense of it together, little by little.
Can I have sessions online?
Yes. Sessions are also available online, over a secure video connection, if that suits you better.
